The regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is paying to attack GIs in Afghanistan.

According to the Sunday Times of London, several Iranian companies stationed in Afghanistan are covertly using their offices to fund Taliban militants to kill American soldiers and blow up their vehicles.


The cash comes through a network of treasurers who pay the taliban salary of $233 a month. Each killed soldier is worth a $1,000 bonus and each vehicle brings a $6,000 bonus. The insurgents are better paid than any Afghan police officer or soldier.


One treasurer claims he doesn't care who he gets his money from. A marriage of convenience is acceptable.

"Iran will never stop funding us, because Americans are dangerous for them as well. The money we get is not dirty. It is for jihad."

The treasurer had been an illiterate farmer who was taught to read and write and was given basic accounting skills by the Taliban last winter.
He travels from the the mountains to an Iranian construction company in Kabul to pick up the cash often hidden in a flour sack, and has himself earned almost $79,000 in the past six months.

Reportedly, the money comes from foreign aid which is transferred through poorly regulated Afghan banks. For example, Kabul Bank, is partly owned by President Hamid Karzai's brother Mahmood. From there, the money returns to Afghanistan through the informal Islamic banking system known as hawala.

According to one Afghan intelligence official, Iranian companies had been formed with the intention of winning contracts funded by foreign aid so that donors' cash could be channeled into the insurgency:

"This means the companies involved in funding the insurgency can cover their tracks easily. It makes it harder for us to trace the cash flow."

The Iranian embassy in Kabul refused to respond to the allegations.

Mexicans offended by cartoon

Political cartoonist Daryl Cagle's drawing ran on the front page of several Mexican newspapers this week.

"It is a shame that a patriotic symbol like our flag, which is so beautiful to me, can be mocked by a stupid cartoonist," said reader to the Mexican newspaper El Universal.

On Cagle's blog in the comments section, we read: "Laws in Mexico with regards to the use and depiction of the flag are in place to prevent this sort of stuff. Please consider taking it down and issuing an apology to the Mexican American community."

Cagle has not yet issued any apology, saying "National flags are common fodder for editorial cartoonists around the world, so the reaction to this cartoon was surprising to me"

Tony Blair served for 10 years as British prime minister, leaving office in June 2007. His new book is a memoir in which over 100 pages are spent talking about the nightmarish decision to invade Iraq.

He asks the reader to take into consideration the time of the decision and the fear people felt after the 9/11 attacks.



Even though the intelligence regarding his possession of WMDs turned out wrong, it is true that Saddam was working to develop such weapons.

"It was an event like no other. It was regarded as such. The British newspapers the next day were typical of those around the globe: 'at war,' they proclaimed. The most common analogy was Pearl Harbor. The notion of a world, not just America, confronted by a deadly evil that had indeed declared war on us all was not then dismissed as the language of the periphery of public sentiment. It was the sentiment. Thousands killed by terror—what else should we call it?"

At the time, we can recall Joe Lieberman saying much the same thing in describing Hussein as a 'ticking time bomb' who represented a serious threat and 'imminent danger' to the United States. Because Hussein refused to comply with the UN resolution to inspect for WMD's, Lieberman reasoned:


You might never know it now, but Lieberman was far from alone in his assessment of Iraq. Consider the following.

We now have the opportunity to do what is critically important in building up a majority of the Muslim world who are not fanatical, violent extremists by showing them here in Iraq that the result of what we've done is to create a country where the followers of Islam can live freer lives."

Tony Blair was pelted with eggs and shoes by hateful, ignorant, and ungrateful anti-war protesters this morning in Dublin, where he held a signing event to promote his book in which he defends the decision to help invade Iraq. 
There were more citizens lined up to buy his book than there were protesters.

The federal government sued Joe Arpaio for failing to cooperate with an investigation into allegations that his department discriminated against prisoners with limited English-language skills, saying he refused to hand over information relating to an alleged "pattern or practice of discriminatory law enforcement conduct." 

"The actions of the sheriff's office are unprecedented. It is unfortunate that the department was forced to resort to litigation to gain access to public documents and facilities," Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division

Arpaio responded:

"These actions make it abundantly clear that Arizona, including this sheriff, IS Washington's new whipping boy.  Now it's time to take the gloves off. ... It's time Americans everywhere wake up and see this administration for what it really is. Calculating, underhanded at times and certainly not looking out for the best interests of the legal citizens residing in this country."

Lisa Murkowski concedes to Joe Miller in Alaska

Thank you Ms. Murkowski for not dragging this out.

Three weeks ago, Murkowski's re-election was all but assured. 

Miller trailed the moderate senator by 30 points or more in polls conducted this summer.  He had been able to raise only about $283,000 to compete with her $3 million.  At one of his rallies, only nine people showed up. 

Then the Tea Party Express spent $600,000 on radio and television ads.  Palin and former Lt. Gov. Loren Leman recorded 11th-hour robocalls for him.

Jan Brewer condemns report to UN that references Arizona immigration law

Hillary Clinton, State Dept., gave report that Arizona's immigration law SB1070  "has generated significant attention and debate at home and around the world" and that the federal government was taking action in court against it.

"The issue is being addressed in a court action that argues that the federal government has the authority to set and enforce immigration law. That action is ongoing; parts of the law are currently enjoined."

At the 'Restore America' rally, 8/28/2010 in Washington, D.C.:
Glenn had wanted a Fly-Over at the beginning of the rally but wasn't allowed to have it.
Precisely at 10 a.m. there was a triangle formation of geese that flew exactly down the center of the reflecting pond and stayed in formation until the end.
Before the start of the event the organizers were playing pastoral music just as this formation of Royal Canadian Geese swooped low over the length of the pond and rose up again in the direction of the Lincoln Memorial.  Many believe God had sent His own flyover to bless the day's message.

I thought, she must have partial, incorrect info, it seemed so absurd to me. I had heard nothing of this anywhere. Then just yesterday I confirmed that this was indeed true through a variety of sources and with Frank Salvato, editor of new media journal."

Chris Christie rips feds after clerical error costs New Jersey $400 million in school funding

A one-page error in the state's failed application for a large federal education grant not only may have cost New Jersey $400 million, it also has reignited Gov. Chris Christie's ongoing feud with the state's teachers union.


Christie admitted the error was his administration's responsibility, but he criticized the Obama administration and the New Jersey Education Association for their responses to the application and the mistake it contained.


The application, which was for a portion of federal Race to the Top grants being offered to states by the Obama administration, required a comparison of state education spending in 2008 and 2009. The state instead submitted budget figures for 2010 and 2011. The error cost the state 4.8 points on 500-point scale. That was more than the difference between New Jersey and Ohio, which was the lowest-scoring state to be awarded the grant.


Christie faulted the Obama administration's lack of "common sense" for not accepting verbal confirmation of the correct fiscal year numbers not included in the faulty paperwork.

Sarah Palin?



She used to have a job, your governor. ... You knew her. ... Or thought you did. ... I know I thought I did. She seemed like a decent person, an outdoorswoman. Her husband’s a steelworker. She seemed to take some OK stands for working families.



And then things got weird. After she tied herself to John McCain and they lost, she blew off Alaska. I guess she figured she’d trade up … shoot for a national stage. Alaska was too far from the Fox TV spotlight.



I bet most of you, on a clear day, can see her hypocrisy from your house.



I think Sarah Palin quit so she wouldn’t have to be accountable … so she wouldn’t have a record that could be scrutinized.



Instead, she’s hanging out on cable TV, almost a parody of herself, coming out with conspiracy theories about Obama and his “death panels.” ... Talking about “the real America.” Talking about building schools in “our neighboring country of Afghanistan.” Writing speech notes to herself on her hands.



Sometimes — about Sarah Palin — you just have to laugh. ... But it’s not really funny. In this charged political environment, her kind of talk gets dangerous. “Don’t retreat … reload” may seem clever, the kind of bull you hear all the time, but put it in context. She’s using crosshairs to illustrate targeted legislators. She’s on the wrong side of the line there. She’s getting close to calling for violence. And some of her fans take that stuff seriously. We’ve got legislators in America who have been living with death threats since the health care votes.



And down in Tyler, Texas, she’s talking about — and I quote — “union thugs.” What? Her husband’s a union man. Is she calling him a thug? Sarah Palin ought to know what union men and women are.



Oh, she goes to great pains to talk differently about unions and the working people who belong to them, knowing full well we’re one and the same.



But using the term “union thug.” That’s poisonous. There’s history behind that rhetoric. That’s how bosses and politicians in decades past justified the terrorizing of workers, the murdering of organizers.



To me, it just doesn’t seem OK to go where she’s going. ... It sits wrong with me. ... The Mama Grizzlies, Sarah Palin says, just sense when something’s not right. … I wonder if those Mama Grizzlies can sense something’s just not right with her.



Quite frankly, America works because lots of people contribute lots of ideas — that’s good — even when some of them are just plain wrong. But people need to come to the table in good faith. That’s not Sarah Palin. She’ll go down in history like McCarthy. Palinism will become an ugly word.
