The federal government sued Joe Arpaio for failing to cooperate with an investigation into allegations that his department discriminated against prisoners with limited English-language skills, saying he refused to hand over information relating to an alleged "pattern or practice of discriminatory law enforcement conduct."
"The actions of the sheriff's office are unprecedented. It is unfortunate that the department was forced to resort to litigation to gain access to public documents and facilities," Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division
Arpaio responded:

"These actions make it abundantly clear that Arizona, including this sheriff, IS Washington's new whipping boy.  Now it's time to take the gloves off. ... It's time Americans everywhere wake up and see this administration for what it really is. Calculating, underhanded at times and certainly not looking out for the best interests of the legal citizens residing in this country."

Arpaio said the federal government was disingenuous and was trying to cover up the fact that it had no evidence of discrimination by the sheriff or his office.

"The Obama administration intended to sue us all along, no matter what we did to try to avert it. They smiled in our faces and then stabbed us in the back with this lawsuit."
