"We have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family. We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life."
As a mother of four, a lawyer, an author, a teacher, and a politician's supportive, loyal, publicly betrayed, and resilient wife, she truly was inspiring and full of life even up until the final days of her sickness. When she was sent home because treatment was no longer effective, she posted a a very unselfish good bye on Facebook:
"You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces –- my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn’t possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. ..."The family attends church at Edenton Street United Methodist in Raleigh, NC, and that is where the funeral will be held at 1 pm Saturday. The funeral will be open to the public.
Two unfortunate reactions to her passing away
---Now that Elizabeth is gone, Rielle Hunter feels she and her "soul mate" John Edwards are free to marry.
---Westboro Baptist Church, the church known for picketing funerals of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, provided the Raleigh Police Department late Thursday with a notice of intent to demonstrate. They are going to show protest against Edwards "for issues relating to her personal life which the church regards as offensive."
The ridiculous church, which is not affiliated with any larger Baptist group, is led by Fred Phelps and mostly attended by his family members.
Groups to "Protect Elizabeth Edwards funeral from Westboro church" are reacting to this announcement, saying they would create "a human buffer" between any protesters and the funeral-goers.
After the funeral, Elizabeth will be buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, next to Wade, her child who died in 1996 in a car accident. The family has asked that people make donations to the Wade Edwards Foundation, which supports a computer lab for high school students in Raleigh.
