Voodoo priests in Haiti blamed for cholera epidemic
Haiti was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in January 2010 that devastated most of Port-au-Prince, killing at least 250,000 people.
Unsanitary conditions in much of Haiti have given rise to the rapid spread of cholera, which causes diarrhea and vomiting. Since the epidemic started in mid-October, it has sickened 91,000 people and killed well over 2,500, affecting all of the nation's 10 provinces.
With death and fear all around, panic has overtaken the country; and that panic is not helped by ignorance. Voodoo priests are targeted for suspicion of casting "spells" to cause cholera. At least 45 male and female voodoo priests have been killed. Many were hacked to death and mutilated by machetes.
Recognized and protected by the constitution as one of Haiti's main religions, more than half of the nation's nearly 10 million people are believed to practice voodoo; but the local authorities are not doing enough to stop the lynchings and punish the killers according to Max Beauvoir, the "Ati" or supreme leader of Haitian voodoo.
