Bill in Congress introduced to save cross atop Mt. Soledad
Beginning in 1989 opponents of the cross have been trying to get it removed legally by claiming it is not a suitable war memorial because the cross is a religious symbol.
Last week, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed and decided that since the 43-foot-tall cross was on public land and because it seemed to endorse a particular religion, it violated "separation of church and state."
"This decision by a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit displays hostility toward religious imagery in the public square that ignores essential aspects of religious liberty and American tradition.
Mt. Soledad Cross is a monument to America's cultural history, a symbol of our Christian heritage and a tribute to brave Americans who laid down their lives in our nation's cause. Their memories should not be besmirched...The Mt. Soledad cross is fully constitutional." Family Research Council
