Holmquist Newbry adds new committee assignments
OLYMPIA… Today state Sen. Janéa Holmquist Newbry, R-Moses Lake, announced she will be serving on two more committees when the Legislature convenes Monday: the Senate Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Economic Development, Trade and Innovation Committee.
“My top priorities in the Senate this year will be creating and preserving jobs and restoring fiscal sanity to our budgeting process,” said Holmquist Newbry. “These new assignments will give me even more opportunity to make a difference on these issues, which are key to the employers, workers and taxpayers of our state.”
The Senate Ways and Means Committee is the primary fiscal committee for the state Senate. It has responsibility for developing operating and capital budgets and tax and pension policy. Members of the committee will have to overcome a $4.6 billion deficit projected for the 2011-13 biennium.
“The people have spoken at the ballot box,” said Holmquist Newbry. “They have said once again that tax increases are off the table, and it’s time that the state lives within its means and focuses on the people’s priorities.”
The Senate Economic Development, Trade and Innovation Committee considers issues relating to international trade, economic development incentives, technical assistance to businesses, tourism, strategic planning, total quality management, and technology-driven economic development.
Besides the two committees to which she was recently assigned, Holmquist will also continue to serve on the Senate Environment, Water and Energy Committee and as ranking Republican member on the Senate Labor, Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee.
“I am heading to Olympia this year with renewed determination to do some heavy lifting and work in a bipartisan manner to get things done and bring jobs back home to the 13th District,” said Holmquist Newbry.
