Washington, DC - As the new congressional leaders take their place in the 112th Congress, Liberty Counsel joined about 30 conservative leaders who sent a joint letter through the Freedom Federation to House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Minority Whip Jon Kyl urging their active support for social issues, especially the sanctity of human life and the preservation of marriage, along with economic and national defense issues.
With regard to social, economic, and national defense issues, the letter states:
"We believe that all three in combination are essential for America and our future. A stool with only one or two legs is unstable. All three legs are necessary. We believe it is critically important that the leadership, and those appointed or elected to lead, embrace all three legs of the stool. A broad-based and sustainable movement requires all three core values...we believe that social issues, including, but not limited to, the sanctity of human life and the preservation of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, are indispensible."
The Freedom Federation is a federation of multiracial, multiethnic and multigenerational leaders and organizations representing about 40 million people. The Freedom Federation is a coalition of independent organizations with large and unique constituencies which subscribe to one or more of the core values as expressed in the Declaration of American Values.
Some of the organizations signing the letter include the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, Liberty University, American Values, Family Research Council, Traditional Values Coalition, Liberty Counsel, Coral Ridge Ministries, Citizens for Community Values, Vision America, and many more.
Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, commented:
"The Reagan Revolution brought together social, economic and national defense conservatives. The foundation of good government requires placing a high value on human life, including the most vulnerable among us. Stable governments depend on strong families. The three legs of Reagan conservativism include social, economic and national defense issues. A stool with only one or two legs will not stand for long. We call on the new congressional leaders to embrace social, economic and national defense issues. We can never call a 'truce' on social issues when children are being killed and marriage is being deconstructed."
