Now that Nigeria is adjusting to democracy after years of military dictatorships and coups, political unrest can be added to their obstacles for peace.
A New Year's Eve explosion tearing through a "mammy market," a beer garden at Sani Abacha army barracks, is reported to have killed 30 people according to an anchor on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. Other reports claim the death toll to be closer to 15, some even less.
The Christian Association of Nigeria said in a statement,
"These acts of violence and arson against peace loving and law abiding Christians and our churches... must stop now as churches are not political/party offices."Goodluck Jonathan linked the attack to the bombings on December 24 in the central city of Jos, which sparked a week of violence. He believes the New Year's attack was committed by the same Islamist group (Boko Haram) and urged the security forces to track down those responsible.
