"And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God?" -- Thomas Jefferson

"And yet the same revolutionary belief for which our forbears fought is still at issue around the globe, the belief that the rights of man come not from generosity of the state but from the hand of God." -- John F. Kennedy

"Because of their belief that power had come from God to each individual, the Framers began the Constitution with the words 'we the people'" -- Newt Gingrich

"There's never been a nation like the United States, ever. It begins with the principles of our founding documents, principles that recognize that our rights come from God, not from our government." -- Marco Rubio

New Year's Eve bombings in Nigeria

Nigeria, an OPEC-member nation which supplies easily refined crude oil to the U.S., has an extensive history of ethnic and religious violence.

Earlier in 2010, gangs armed with guns and machetes tore through mostly Christian villages, killing around 500 people.

New Year's Eve
Now that Nigeria is adjusting to democracy after years of military dictatorships and coups, political unrest can be added to their obstacles for peace.

A New Year's Eve explosion tearing through a "mammy market," a beer garden at Sani Abacha army barracks, is reported to have killed 30 people according to an anchor on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. Other reports claim the death toll to be closer to 15, some even less.

The Christian Association of Nigeria said in a statement,
"These acts of violence and arson against peace loving and law abiding Christians and our churches... must stop now as churches are not political/party offices."
Goodluck Jonathan linked the attack to the bombings on December 24 in the central city of Jos, which sparked a week of violence.  He believes the New Year's attack was committed by the same Islamist group (Boko Haram) and urged the security forces to track down those responsible.
