14-year old rape victim is publicly flogged, collapses, and dies

Bangladesh:  A 40-year-old man allegedly raped Hena Begum who was his young cousin just 14 years old.  She reported the rape, and then his family accused her of adultery and beat her up.  The very next day, she was sentenced under Islamic shariah law to be flogged 100 lashes.  Her father was also told pay a fine of about $700 (average annual income is around $500).

After 80 lashes, she collapsed.  Her family took her to a hospital where she died six days later.

Dorbesh Khan, the girl's father asked,

"What sort of justice is this? My daughter has been beaten to death in the name of justice. If it had been a proper court then my daughter would not have died."
Bangladesh's high court has ordered district officials in Shariatpur to explain why they did not protect the girl. The court ruled eight months ago that Shariah punishment was illegal.

A group of people in the town of Shariatpur gave a rally in protest against those who gave the fatwa and are demanding action against them.

Four people thus far have been arrested in connection with Hena's death.
