"And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God?" -- Thomas Jefferson

"And yet the same revolutionary belief for which our forbears fought is still at issue around the globe, the belief that the rights of man come not from generosity of the state but from the hand of God." -- John F. Kennedy

"Because of their belief that power had come from God to each individual, the Framers began the Constitution with the words 'we the people'" -- Newt Gingrich

"There's never been a nation like the United States, ever. It begins with the principles of our founding documents, principles that recognize that our rights come from God, not from our government." -- Marco Rubio

Labor supporters and activists have been protesting since Tuesday against Governor Scott Walker's proposal.

The Legislature's budget committee passed Walker's bill on a partisan vote just before midnight Wednesday.

Walker said the bill is necessary to close a budget shortfall of $137 million and a looming $3.6 billion deficit in the next two-year budget.

It wasn't long after the budget committee passed the bill that a group of Democrat lawmakers blocked the bill's passage by refusing to show up for a vote.  They left the state in an effort to force Republicans to the negotiating table.

Teachers took to the street to protest a reduction in their benefits.  Some parents supported their right to protest, but many parents were angry that teachers were shirking their classroom duties.  They wished the teachers had found a different way to express their opposition.

One of the protesters who came to support Walker's bill was Dave Willoughby, a swimming coach at a private club.  He held a sign saying "These teachers have abandoned post."
"There are parents with jobs who were forced to go home because their kids weren't in school. That was real helpful. Yeah, that's really what's best for the kids."
