"And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God?" -- Thomas Jefferson

"And yet the same revolutionary belief for which our forbears fought is still at issue around the globe, the belief that the rights of man come not from generosity of the state but from the hand of God." -- John F. Kennedy

"Because of their belief that power had come from God to each individual, the Framers began the Constitution with the words 'we the people'" -- Newt Gingrich

"There's never been a nation like the United States, ever. It begins with the principles of our founding documents, principles that recognize that our rights come from God, not from our government." -- Marco Rubio

When it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Chuck Schumer has been consistent.

In 2000, Schumer was asked by the Middle East Quarterly if he thought both the Jews and Palestinians were living up to their commitments. His answer,

"Not at all. The Israelis are doing what they said they would. Note how they’re wrenching themselves and making concessions. But not so the Palestinian Authority. Its textbooks, for example, still state that Jews are terrible people and are filled with horrid anti-Semitic caricatures. Nor has Arafat been telling Palestinians about the concessions they have to make to end the conflict. To a considerable degree, the process has been one-sided."
In 2010, he expressed his dismay over Obama's blaming Jewish communities as the obstacle to peace when in reality the Jews living and building homes in Samaria and Judea pose no obstacle to a genuine peace.
The reason we don’t have peace in the Middle East is because a large percentage, I would say the majority … of Palestinians and Arabs do not believe there should be a Jewish state anywhere in the Middle East. Period.”
He used similar words in standing up again for Israel more recently,

"The reason there is no peace in the Middle East is very simple. It’s because the majority of Palestinians and the majority of Arabs don’t believe there should be an Israel. It’s that simple. Anyone who tries to figure out a way to solve this conflict without realizing that truth will never get anywhere."
Left-leaning blog ThinkProgress disagrees that Palestinians and Arabs wish to destroy Israel as a primary goal. Zaid Jilani writes that Palestinians and Arabs are interested in peace because polls show that they said so. According to those polls, all they want is for tiny Israel to shrink a little more by giving away land. Then, they say, there will be peace.
