"And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God?" -- Thomas Jefferson
"And yet the same revolutionary belief for which our forbears fought is still at issue around the globe, the belief that the rights of man come not from generosity of the state but from the hand of God." -- John F. Kennedy
"Because of their belief that power had come from God to each individual, the Framers began the Constitution with the words 'we the people'" -- Newt Gingrich
"There's never been a nation like the United States, ever. It begins with the principles of our founding documents, principles that recognize that our rights come from God, not from our government." -- Marco Rubio

Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot. Doctors optimistic she will survive.
She was just elected to her third term as a moderate Democrat.
As part of the Blue Dog coalition of centrist Democrats and, as a former executive in her family's tire dealership, she was a strong proponent of small-business interests.
She supported the Second Amendment and said she had been a longtime gun owner. In 2007, she married Mark Kelly, a Navy fighter pilot and astronaut who has been on three space shuttle missions.
In 2002, at age 32, she became the youngest woman elected to the state Senate in Arizona. She was named woman of the year by a Tucson business magazine in 2005.
About the shooter
Loughner is considered unstable, not necessarily insane. One classmate said that Loughner seemed to be on his own planet. Another acquaintance called him a "pot-smoking loner."
He wrote about literacy. In a written message on YouTube, Loughner said: "The majority of people, who reside in District-8 are illiterate - hilarious. I don't control your English grammar structure, but you control your English grammar structure."
He was thinking of starting his own monetary system. "In conclusion, my ambition - is for informing literate dreamers about a new currency; in a few days, you know I'm conscience dreaming! Thank you!"
In a YouTube video dated Dec. 15, Loughner describes himself as a U.S. military recruit who had applied to join the Army. The Army, however, said it rejected Loughner as a recruit in 2008.
Loughner mentions "MEPS in Phoenix" (Military Entrance Processing Station) that all Arizona recruits from every branch of service pass through before leaving for basic training.
"Every United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix is receiving one mini bible before the tests. Jared Loughner is a United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix. Therefore, Jared Loughner is receiving one mini bible before the tests.
"I didn't write a belief on my Army application and the recruiter wrote on the application: None."
His favorite books include: "Mein Kampf" and "The Communist Manifesto" "Animal Farm," "Brave New World," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

From Michelle Malkin:
"He seems to have more in common with Jane Fonda than with Sarah Palin, doesn’t he?" Only in the calculating minds of Tucson massacre ghouls at the NYTimes, MSNBC & Democrat leadership do these things add up to “Tea Party-inspired, immigrant-hating, GOP-fueled right wing terrorist.”
Liberal media such as Paul Krugman blamed Sarah Palin and the Tea Party.
Loughner had been stalking Giffords since 2007. That is before Palin captured the fascination of the American people and before the modern Tea Party was born.
According to a close friend, Loughner’s motive was:
“More chaos, maybe,” he says. “I think the reason he did it was mainly to just promote chaos. He wanted the media to freak out about this whole thing. He wanted exactly what’s happening. He wants all of that.” Tierney thinks that Loughner’s mindset was like the Joker in the most recent Batman movie: “He fucks things up to fuck shit up, there’s no rhyme or reason, he wants to watch the world burn. He probably wanted to take everyone out of their monotonous lives: ‘Another Saturday, going to go get groceries’—to take people out of these norms that he thought society had trapped us in.”
