Five men sentenced to jail for funding Muslim Brotherhood

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest opposition group, is banned under an Egyptian law which forbids religious parties.

Jan. 7, 2011, CAIRO - An Egyptian court sentenced five Islamists to prison for laundering money to fund the Muslim Brotherhood.

The verdict was handed down by the emergency security court, whose verdicts cannot be appealed.
The five men were convicted of "laundering money and funding an outlawed group."

Last November, police arrested more than 1,000 of its members before a parliamentary election that it boycotted after the first round in which it failed to win a single seat.

The group accused the government of rigging the election.
